Homeschool Laws by State: Arizona

The compulsory attendance ages for children in the state of Arizona are 6 to 16; however, if you plan to homeschool, instruction may be delayed until the age of 8.

Arizona has a fairly simple system in place for homeschooling, with only a couple of requirements. First, you must file an "Affidavit of Intent to Homeschool" with the county superintendent (this must include a certified copy of the child's birth certificate) within 30 days of beginning or ending homeschooling. This affidavit must be filed even if home instruction is planned to be delayed until the child is 8 years old. This only needs to be filed one time.

Five subjects are required by the state; Reading, grammar, math, social studies and science. However, there are no attendance, recordkeeping or testing requirements as long as you homeschool. There are no qualifications required for teachers.

Finally, if you decided to enter your child into the public school system, they will be tested to determine their proper grade placement within the system.

State homeschool organizations: "Arizona Families for Home Education" and the "Home Education Network of Arizona". Both of these organizations maintain a copy of the affidavit that must be filed with your local superintendent.
