Resource of the Day: More than 40 homeschool freebies!

Wowee, look at the email I received from the "The Old Schoolhouse" magazine the other day! They have put together a directory of free things for homeschoolers, and let me tell you, they are quality. Writing, history, atronomy, critical thinking, Bible, e-books, curriculum samples and SO much more are available - you really have to check it out yourself!

I can't wait to delve in and grab some of these for my two!

Resource of the Day: Free lesson plans and other teaching goodies

I stumbled across this page yesterday:

Teaching & Learning Company

If you click on that page, you'll find several free resources - unit studies and the like. There's even a writing and coloring page generator! They are broken into age groups, and each group has several free plans and studies available in a variety of topics. They change them out from time to time, putting up new stuff, too!

Resource of the Day: Homeschool eStore - a freebie, and a voting opportunity!

Homeschool eStore is the place to be for two not-to-be-missed items this week:

1. This week only, their freebie is a "Century Timeline", a chart to cover an entire entury on one page, as well as some guidelines and ideas for handling timelines in your schoolwork.

2. Through February 4th, children ages 7 to 17 can vote in Homeschool eStore's mock election. You must have an account with Homeschool eStore, but that's free. (Each account can let up to 5 kids vote.) That's a great way to get your kids thinking about the political process!

Resource of the Day: Free documentaries of all kinds

Now, here's an interesting site - FreeDocumentaries.org. They have quite a collection of documentaries that are free for everyone to watch. The site leans heavily to political and politically-related material, but there are a few gems in there. It runs the gamut from PBS and BBC films to popular documentaries like "Super Size Me", "Bowling for Columbine" and that WalMart one that came out a couple of years ago.

Naturally, for the most part this is going to be for middle-school and higher grades, and even then you'll probably want to preview many of them before showing them to your children.

Resource of the Day: Learning To Tell Time

Here's a cute page to help teach your child how to tell time.

Time For Time

When you first visit the page, you get a clock with the current time. You can then adjust the time by 1 minute, 15 minutes, 30 minutes or a whole hour. There is a digital clock at the top that will show the time if you click on it to start it. This way, you or the child could change the clock to any time you want, take a stab at telling the time, then they can self-check their answer by turning on the digital clock.

A nice additional feature is that the background reflects the "sky" that's appropriate for the time of day. So the sun rises and sets over the course of the day, followed by the moon at night.

Resource of the Day: Video Project/Contest

Okay, not really an educational resource today. But you could turn into a very educational project if you like! Laurel Springs School (a distance learning place for homeschoolers) is sponsoring a YouTube video contest on "Why Homeschool Is Cool". And you can win MONEY!

Resource of the Day: WebQuests

I haven't investigated WebQuests too much, but if I'm understanding them right, they are basically online scavenger hunts - only, the prize is the knowledge! Here is a place where you can search for WebQuests for your child by subject, grade level, etc.
