Resource of the Day: Spanish lessons in 15 minutes a day

While this site doesn't have a *lot* of lessons, it's about 40 - good for daily practice, certainly. The lessons come in the form of podcasts (so you have to know how to wrangle those things) with a listen and repeat format. The lessons tend to be for everyday, survival Spanish; things you really need to be able to say to get around if you're in a Spanish-speaking country.

Oh, there is also a quick link to a translator, and a hangman game!

Resource of the Day: Make your own math manipulative blocks

Inspired by the demo of a popular math program this past week, I've put together a set of math manipulative blocks that you can print yourself on heavy cardstock to use. Just print the blocks on different colors of paper, or color them after printing on white paper, and cut them out. There are many, many math applications for these blocks. We're currently using them to practice skip-counting: just deal out a stack like playing cards, counting while you put down each one.

All of the blocks are 1 inch square, so they fit on top of each other. You can do all of the four major operations, as well as work with fractions.

Resource of the Day: Greek Mythology for kids

The study of Greco-Roman mythology is actually fairly important in order to be literate in the English language. The stories so pervade the ancient culture and have been since referenced so much that a basic understanding of at least the major stories helps quite a bit. I've found a cute site for kids:

MythWeb

While it only goes over the Greek versions of the names and stories, it's not hard to then research and find the Roman equivalents if you so desire.

Resource of the Day: Fun craft project - foam glasses case

Today's project is a fun project that would be good for these end-of-winter, cabin fever days. Those of us down here in the Deep South are lucky in that we are already starting to see the occasional sign of Spring - but then it gets yanked away again in a couple of days, anyway. Those of you up North won't see good weather again for quite awhile, I'm afraid!

Even if your child doesn't wear glasses, they may know someone who does and would like to make a unique, custom case for them. You'll find the instructions RIGHT HERE.

Resource of the Day: Free lesson plans for kids' Bible studies

These two pages have some great, basic Bible lessons for kids. For the most part, the lessons are all about the "stories" of the Bible - characters and events. There are a few geared toward ideas, such as The Fruit of the Spirit and images of the book of Revelation; however, there is no theology presented that I've seen. They are pretty much just basic, follow-along-the-verses lessons with no expounding going on.

Each lesson has a cover page, coloring page, two lesson pages (covering the same questions, but at different age levels), two search-a-word puzzles (again, at two age levels) and one easy crossword. These make a good jumping-off point for discussion style lessons.

Resource of the Day: Newton's Apple online!

I don't remember ever even hearing of Newton's Apple until my son found a book about the show at the library one day, but my husband remembers watching this PBS science show as a child. It's a science show, but not zany like Bill Nye or Beakman. And now it's available online! They have a huge site filled with activity guides, experiment pages, science project ideas, and best of all, over 300 streaming video clips from the show. The show ran from 1983 to 1998, but all of the videos I looked at seemed to be from later years - they don't look too dated or old.

To get to the videos, just go to a category page and scroll through the lesson titles. Some have just a video, others just a lesson guide, while others have both. There's just one problem - for some reason, the sound only works in one side on these videos. (And someone else mentioned it, so I know that it's not just my computer.)

Enjoy!

Resource of the Day: Free documentaries of all kinds

Now, here's an interesting site - FreeDocumentaries.org. They have quite a collection of documentaries that are free for everyone to watch. The site leans heavily to political and politically-related material, but there are a few gems in there. It runs the gamut from PBS and BBC films to popular documentaries like "Super Size Me", "Bowling for Columbine" and that WalMart one that came out a couple of years ago.

Naturally, for the most part this is going to be for middle-school and higher grades, and even then you'll probably want to preview many of them before showing them to your children.

Resource of the Day: Learning To Tell Time

Here's a cute page to help teach your child how to tell time.

Time For Time

When you first visit the page, you get a clock with the current time. You can then adjust the time by 1 minute, 15 minutes, 30 minutes or a whole hour. There is a digital clock at the top that will show the time if you click on it to start it. This way, you or the child could change the clock to any time you want, take a stab at telling the time, then they can self-check their answer by turning on the digital clock.

A nice additional feature is that the background reflects the "sky" that's appropriate for the time of day. So the sun rises and sets over the course of the day, followed by the moon at night.

The course comes with a Teacher’s Guide, which will assist the teacher at any point where the student may possibly run into a problem. There are no additional purchases needed to do this course beyond the Study Guide, Teacher’s Guide, test and answer guide. This course has proven remarkably effective with students of all ages above nine who are reticent to write, and is a tremendous success with students already interested in writing! This course requires no additional materials. Generally, students take between 25-40 hours to complete this course.
