How To Make a Fact Wheel
Fact Wheels are a fun little project which allows the student to present a batch of facts in a simple manner. While there are several steps involved, they are not difficult to make. If you have older students, you can also introduce geometry concepts with them, having them to create the circles and the fraction sections you need. For easier work, you can also print out pre-printed circles which are available on our Free Printables Page.
1. Decide on the size of wheel that you need, then cut out two circles that size. Color choice is up to you, although differing colors allow contrast that makes it a little easier to see the items inside the wheel.
2. Lightly pencil in the number of sections that you will be using, if you haven't used one of the printable circles. Do this on both circles.
3. Within the confines of one section on the wheel that will be on top, create your window. Cut this out.
4. Flip over your top circle then lightly pencil in a copy of the window within each section of the circle that will be on the bottom. (The sample picture shows the windows drawn with dark lines just so that you can see them in the photo.)
5. Draw or write your pictures or facts within each penciled-in window on your bottom circle. If you want, you can then erase your pencil marks.
6. Label or decorate your top circle.
7. Place the two circles together, then push a small paper fastener ("brad") through the center of each one. This might be easier if you use a small nail or an awl to start the holes. Open the arms of the brad, then twist the circles gently to create the full opening for the brad.
8. If placing in a lap book folder or on a display, run a bead of glue around the edge of the bottom wheel, then glue in place. Make sure that you do not get glue in the center hole where the brad has been placed, or it won't turn.
